I’ve been hearing about more and more people choosing to live a natural and holistic lifestyle. Choosing to live off the land rather than depending on big corporations for all their food and living supplies.
Learning about holistic living can seem like a lot of information, and trying to incorporate everything might seem like an unattainable task.
I am here to share with you that living naturally doesn’t have to be difficult and show you simple ways you can incorporate holistic living into your daily routine.
This post is all about the 13 Super Easy Ways to Start Living a Holistic Lifestyle today.
1. Spend Time Outside in Nature
Wherever you live, just go outside.
Go for a walk, stand in the sun, and breathe in that fresh air. Being outside, spending time in nature, and getting sunlight in your eyes and on your skin has proven very positive health benefits.
Even if you live in the city, go for a walk around the block, or find a local park. If you live near a provincial park, go explore it.
If you don’t have a lot of time and need to get back to work, even getting outside for 10-15 minutes will help improve your mood and many other health conditions.
2. Get Enough Sleep
On average people do not get enough sleep.
A big part of living a holistic lifestyle is respecting your body and health. Sleep is so important for our overall health, which makes it very important in holistic living.
From people I know and have talked with, the average number of hours they sleep is between 5-7 hours per night.
Our bodies use the time we sleep to repair so the following day we are ready to take on our upcoming tasks and challenges without illness.
When we don’t get enough sleep or enough quality sleep our bodies do not have the time to repair and heal, which can eventually lead to disease or illness.
A big part of getting quality sleep is making sure the room is dark enough. Your body needs darkness to fully relax into a deep sleep to heal and repair. Here are different ways you can create darkness in your room to sleep better!
As adults we need between 7-9 hours of sleep a night to fully receive all the benefits that sleep provides and allow our bodies to heal without distractions. Some people may not require as much and others may require a bit more, but this is on a general basis.
3. Practice Mindfulness
Take the time each day to practice a little bit of mindfulness.
That doesn’t need to be meditating for 45 minutes, or 1 hour of journaling like you hear some people do. Even if you only have 5 or 10 minutes in the morning, on an afternoon break, or in the evening before bed, you can do a quick meditation to focus your intentions.
You can grab a journal and do a little bit of a brain or heart dump. Here are 23 Mindfulness Journal Prompts you can try!
If you’re religious you can read the bible or write in a prayer journal, or you can even practice a few minutes of conscious breathwork.
It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, just take a few minutes each day to center yourself.
Remind yourself of everything you’re grateful for and remember that we are all one. Practicing a little bit of mindfulness each day will help improve your mood and outlook on life.
4. Physical Activity
I feel like most people know that physical activity is important in keeping healthy, but the hard part is actually doing it.
You just need to start. I find that is what people struggle with the most.
You can go to a gym and once you’re in that environment you’ll generally feel a bit more motivated to exercise. If you prefer to stay at home, you can do yoga, pilates, or even go for a walk or run outside.
If you’re not motivated to start that is okay, most people aren’t. Say to yourself, “I’m doing this for future me”, and get out that yoga mat or put on those running shoes and just get out there.
Once you start it always gets easier.
And remember, you don’t have to commit to a 1-hour workout right off the start, try 15 minutes, then maybe 20 minutes the next day, then 30, and keep going.
Do what feels right to you.
Keep in mind some days you might feel like pushing yourself and running hard while other days you may need to take it easy and maybe go for a walk or do some relaxing yoga.
Any movement is better than no movement.
5. Eat More Whole Foods
Eating whole foods is another aspect of living a holistic lifestyle. This can be as simple as picking up an apple instead of a granola bar or cutting up some veggies for a snack.
I know life can get busy and a lot of people are usually looking for a quick meal they can put together, so if you want to go a little bit further in this pillar you can do a bit of food preparation.
This can mean trying your best to keep good food stocked in your fridge and ready to eat. It may take a little bit more energy to get this done but everything good takes time.
Food Prep Idea:
Say you have an idea to make stir fry.
Perfect!
There are lots of whole foods we can have in there.
You can make chicken on the stove with some seasonings, olive oil, or coconut oil. You can get a pan sautéing with all your favourite veggies, peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, carrots, or anything you like!
Then you can make some rice by either using a rice maker or boiling it on the stove.
Now the trick here is to make a lot of everything so that this food can last you 3-4 days. That way when you go to the fridge there is already food ready to eat.
You don’t have to think about what to make; you can simply warm it up.
My husband and I do this with pretty much everything we make. I only try and cook large amounts of food a couple times a week because it does take a bit of time but then for the following few days, we don’t have as much cooking to do.
If you wanted something special one night, then you can make that too but at least you’re covered with a good healthy meal ready in the fridge.
6. Practice Grounding
Grounding, otherwise known as earthing, is the action of connecting your bare skin with the earth’s surface. It can be walking barefoot outside on the grass, sand, or dirt. It can also be swimming in a lake or the ocean.
Earthing is about connecting with the negatively charged free electrons from the earth’s surface and allowing them to transfer into your body through your skin. In another post, I go over all the benefits of practicing grounding and all the different ways you can do it.
7. Gardening
Getting your hands in the soil and learning how to grow different plants and food is another way to embrace living a holistic lifestyle.
Gardening is a great skill to build which allows you to grow beautiful flowers you can decorate your home with or gift out to friends or family members.
You can also learn how to grow different types of herbs, fruits, and vegetables which then you can use in your cooking.
Being able to grow your own food provides you with the feeling of accomplishment. Knowing you grew something from a seed that you can now use to nourish yourself and your family.
It also allows you to be more self-sufficient. You don’t have to fully rely on grocery stores or markets for your food, you can provide food for yourself now.
What a wonderful feeling!
8. Self-Care
Practicing self-care is a huge part of living a holistic lifestyle, and it can mean an array of things.
It can mean being more conscious of the way you talk to yourself. Stopping yourself when you notice you’re speaking negatively towards yourself, and instead start to add in more positive self-talk.
It can also mean having a physical self-care routine. You could start creating a nightly routine by having a bath, doing your skincare, and then reading a lovely book in bed before going to sleep.
Giving yourself the time to slow down and connect back with you.
Self-care can also be journaling and allowing yourself to release any stored emotions. Or it can be doing some meditating or yoga. Whatever you feel drawn to.
You can go to a place of worship or get outside and spend time in nature.
Self-care can be anything that makes you feel like you. That helps you feel more connected with yourself and provides you with an overall better feeling.
9. Drink Tea
There are so many wonderful mixtures of tea you can buy, and they all have different benefits. Many herbs are filled with antioxidants and drinking them in herbal teas is a great way to boost your immune system.
Everyone loves a nice warm cup of tea.
There have even been studies showing that some teas may help reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, help lower cholesterol, encourage weight loss, and can also help support your mental alertness.
If you’re interested in drinking green tea, check out this post I wrote about all the benefits of green tea for our body and even for acne.
10. Natural Cleaning Products
Switch from all the chemical-filled cleaning products and start using more natural ones.
I know sometimes it can be hard to figure out which cleaning products are good for you in the stores, and which aren’t.
Start with products that have fewer ingredients and try to find ones with ingredients you can pronounce and are aware of what they are.
You can always Google an ingredient while in the grocery store, I’ve done it many times.
You can even go another route and make your own cleaning products.
There are so many recipes online that show you how to make your own. I know some basics are mixtures of water, vinegar, baking sodas, and essential oils. Take note that these ingredients are all safe to breathe in every day.
11. Cleaner Candles & Diffusers
Being selective with your candles and diffusers is a good one because people love to have their homes smell good.
Smell is one of the biggest senses and to have a good-smelling home just makes it that much more welcoming.
Unfortunately, a lot of the candles and oil/wax diffusers on the market are filled with harsh chemicals that aren’t great for us to breathe in.
A simple swap is to buy candles that are all natural and from companies that only use whole ingredients with natural scents like essential oils.
Look for candles without lead or phthalates. Ones that have 100% plant-based waxes, and wicks made from hemp, wood, or cotton.
Another great thing is to have a diffuser and buy your own essential oils and create scents you love.
This way your home will smell great, and you will know exactly what’s in the air.
12. Incorporate Natural Remedies
Another way to practice living a holistic lifestyle is by using natural remedies when you or someone becomes ill or comes down with a cold. Instead of immediately popping Tylenol or Advil like a lot of people do, try natural remedies instead.
First off, most times when someone gets a cold it’s because their body is telling them they need to slow down. Your body is saying it needs time to rest and recover.
Sometimes simply allowing yourself to get a lot of sleep and to drink lots of water can do wonders. Reducing food intake, and decreasing your stress for a couple of days will also get you feeling better.
A lot of natural herbs can be used for cold/flu, nausea, etc, and don’t have all the side effects that standard American/Canadian medicine does.
Check online for natural remedies for what you or your family member is experiencing instead of jumping right into a pharmaceutical drug. You may be surprised how well the holistic route works.

13. Get Sunlight Exposure
Soaking in the beautiful beams of light the sun gives us has so many benefits. It can help improve your sleep, decrease stress, strengthen your immune system, and help to reduce depression.
Getting sun in your eyes and on your body is a wonderful activity to enjoy and practice regularly.
While getting sun on your skin helps increase vitamin D and provides other benefits, getting it in your eyes specifically is also very important.
Viewing sunlight in the morning and evening through your eyes can help regulate your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is your body’s internal clock.
When your circadian rhythm is regulated, you will start having better quality sleep. This is because your body will naturally get tired when the sun goes down and will wake up when the sun rises.
This will help improve your mood and make you feel better during your wakened hours.
Above I went over 13 ways you can start living a more holistic lifestyle. Now, you can start by choosing a couple of the above things to incorporate into your life. Or you can dive in and do them all!
